The Centre, which currently consists of 27 staff and students and associated researchers, is a collaboration between Imperial College London, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and the Health Protection Agency.

The Centre's aim is to integrate infection prevention into NHS service delivery. It is attempting to do this via a unique multi-disciplinary programme of research. This Asthma Scholarship involves social and management sciences which are examining the themes of behaviour change and innovation adoption, laboratory science which aims to develop new diagnostics, epidemiology which is investigating new ways of using patient data and education. The Asthma Scholarship research team are therefore from varied backgrounds and are based across several of Imperial College's campuses.

The Asthma Scholarship post-holder will be expected to manage and co-ordinate all the activities of the Centre and will line-manage the CIPM team secretary who will provide additional support. The nature of the role ensures a greatly varied and interesting work-load from recruitment and grant funding applications through to ethics and committee work. The Asthma Scholarship ideal candidate must have extensive experience in a similar role- preferably within higher education or the NHS and should have strong leadership and communications skills. The Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at MIT (MIT AKPIA @) is pleased to announce its postdoctoral fellowship for the academic year 2011-2012. The scholarship program is intended for researchers with a PhD in all areas of architecture - including architecture, art, landscape and urban history, design, technology, computing, planning urban anthropology and archeology - who are engaged in research on an Islamic topic. One to three scholarships will be awarded.

The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (VPM) at The Ohio State University (OSU) initiated a collaborative effort on “Sustainable Capacity Building in Veterinary Public Health and Biotechnology in Eastern Africa” in partnership with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and three primary Eastern Africa Academic institutes: Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), University of Nairobi (Kenya) and Sokoine University of Agriculture (Tanzania) and several affiliate institutions established a “VPH-Biotech Eastern Africa Consortium”. The vision of this program is to establish sustainable research and training capacity in Eastern Africa, create a critical mass and network of professionals in the region that will address key veterinary public health and livestock biotechnology issues to solve the increasing need in food safety and security.

The fellowships: OSU is recruiting three PhD candidates from partner institutes included in the consortium. As this is an initial pilot activity, during this cycle, priority will be given to the three academic institutes identified as primary capacity strengthening partners: Aklilu Lema Institute of Pathobiology (ALIPB), Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia; Department of Public Health, Pharmacology and Toxicology (PHPT), University of Nairobi, Kenya and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania. Each institute is expected to announce this call to all academic staff members to maximize quality of the applicant pool. OSU expects a minimum of three potential candidates from each institute. In cases when no candidate is identified from the primary partner by the application deadline indicated below or the applicants do not fulfill the criteria set forth below, qualified applicants from affiliate institutes will be considered.

Format: This PhD fellowship program will be conducted using a Sandwich format. Stipend will be provided by three collaborating units within OSU. Successful candidates will spend two years period at OSU (Phase I) conducting mentored research and taking course work as needed. During this period, each successful applicant will be assigned to one of the three OSU sponsor units: Infectious Diseases Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory, Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (VPM-IDMEL); Food Animal Health Research Program (FAHRP) and Public Health Preparedness for Infectious Diseases (PHPID). At the end of this period, fellows will be reallocated to their home institution (Phase II) and are expected to conduct PhD dissertation research as identified by the candidate together with OSU and regional mentors in the areas of infectious diseases of high public health significance. Fellows must enroll full-time at their home eastern African university throughout the fellowship period and will work in close collaboration with academic advisors from home university; relevant units at The Ohio State University and ILRI (particularly BecA).

Financial support: Successful fellows will receive a full stipend support commensurate to the OSU standards for the first two years period (Phase I). Fellows will receive additional stipend support during the last two years (Phase II) activities in East Africa to supplement their income from home institution. In addition, tuition for courses will be covered through a collaborative student exchange programs between OSU and respective eastern African institutions. Partial dissertation research cost is expected to be covered by the home country sources and extramural funding jointly developed by the candidate and co-mentors. Additional benefits including a roundtrip airfare and other fringe benefits will be covered by OSU for the first two years and home institution thereafter.

Requirements: Interested applicant must fulfill the following primary conditions: Current academic staff member with MSc and supported by the primary partner institutes from Eastern Africa as part of the capacity building effort. Are you interested in a research career and in developing tomorrow’s systems for modelling, forecasting and control in urban water management? Then here is an opportunity to do a PhD in an internationally recognised research environment.

Wider context of the project

The PhD scholarship is part of a large research project titled “Storm- and Wastewater Informatics” (SWI), which is funded by the Danish Council for Strategic Research starting in 2008 and lasting for 5 years (see http://swi.env.dtu.dk).

The overall aims of SWI are to close the current knowledge gaps within prediction and control of current and future conditions in integrated urban wastewater systems, and major outputs will be components of an intelligent real-time decision support system, following a drop of water from the cloud, throughout the sewer–wastewater treatment system and into the receiving waters. Several PhD students and postdocs will be employed under the SWI project on topics spanning from weather radar and numerical weather prediction models, to fusion of system-wide data and models and real time decision support and control.

The project partners include the Technical University of Denmark, Aalborg University, the Danish Meteorological Institute, three internationally oriented software and technology providers (DHI, Krüger and PH-Consult) and 4 of the largest Danish public utility companies (Avedøre Wastewater Services, Copenhagen Energy, Lynettefællesskabet and Århus municipality). Common case studies will make the project results operational in practice.

Scientific focus of the announced PhD position

The subject of this PhD position is to develop scenario based methods for integrated real time control of the sewage systems and wastewater treatment plants. The advantage of the scenario approach is that rather complicated criteria functions can be used in order to define the optimal control or action.

The project will focus on the use of stochastic differential equations as a part of the so-called grey box modelling techniques. The grey box approach enables procedures for an efficient way of combining information from physics with information embedded in data.

Initially models for rainfall events will be studied with the purpose of obtaining more reliable forecasts of the inflow to the wastewater treatment plant. The primary purpose is to develop methods and models which facilitate a simultaneous utilisation of data from local weather radar systems, classical tip measurements, and measurements of flow in more distant part of the sewer system.

A study of methods and models for describing the uncertainty of the forecasts will be an important part of the study. This part will establish a reliable framework for generating scenarios. Methods like quantile regression will be studied. The uncertainties as well as point forecasts will provide the basis for establishing a framework for scenario generation using on-line data.

Candidate requirements

At the date of appointment candidates must hold an MSc degree in mathematical statistics, engineering sciences, natural sciences and/or mathematics, preferably with a specialization in one of the following fields: Mathematical statistics, environmental engineering, urban hydrology, numerical and stochastic modelling, and software engineering. Any model is a simplification of reality and therefore, the candidate must have a critical approach to modelling where formulation and testing of hypotheses are part of the natural workflow. The data used in the project are all time series data, and therefore the candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge related to statistical methods for time series analysis. A knowledge corresponding the contents of the book: H. Madsen - Time Series Analysis - CRC Press (ISBN 978-1-4200-5967-0 is preferred but not a prerequisite.

Keep in mind, however, that a student who majors in medicine, dentistry or welfare science will not be allowed to engage in clinical training such as medical care and operative surgery until he/she obtains a permit from the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare under applicable Japanese laws. Majors in traditional entertainment such as Kabuki and classical Japanese dances, or in subjects that seek practical training in specific technologies or techniques at factories or companies are excluded.

QUALIFICATIONS

(1) Nationality: Applicant must have the nationality of a country which has diplomatic relations with the Japanese government. This applies at such times to stateless persons, too. Applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application will not be eligible.

Applicant screening will be made at the Japanese Embassy/Consulate General hereinafter referred to as the “Japanese legation”) in the country of Applicant's nationality (except where two or more countries are attended by the same Japanese Embassy/Consulate General).

(2) Age: Applicant must have been born on or after April 2,1976.

(3) Academic Background: Applicant must be a graduate from a Japanese university or have academic ability equal or superior to that of a Japanese university graduate. A person will be deemed to have academic ability equal or superior to that of a university graduate, if he/she

. has completed or will complete a 16-year school curriculum in a foreign country (or an 18-year school curriculum if he/she desires to enroll in a doctoral course in the field of medicine, dentistry or veterinary science, or pharmacy which is founded on a 6-year department or faculty); or

. is or will be aged 22 or older and has taken an individual entrance qualification examination and has been judged by a graduate school as being equal or superior in academic ability to a university graduate (or 24 or older if he/she desires to enroll in a doctoral course in the field of medicine, dentistry or veterinary science, or pharmacy which is founded on a 6-year department or faculty).

Note: Eligible applicants include those who otherwise satisfy or will satisfy qualification requirements for admission to a Japanese graduate school. As a general rule, a person who has completed a doctoral course may not apply unless he/she seeks to obtain a degree.

(4) Major Field of Study: Applicant should apply for the field of study he/she studied at the previous university or any related field. Applicant must choose a field on which he/she can receive education and perform research at the university of his/her choice.

(5) Japanese Language: Applicant must be willing to learn the Japanese language, interested in Japan and enthusiastic about deepening his/her understanding of Japan after arriving, and capable of engaging in study and research while adapting himself/herself to life in Japan.

(6) Health: Applicant must be physically and mentally healthy enough to pursue study at university.

(7) Arrival in Japan: Applicant must be able to leave for and arrive in Japan between the 1st and 7th of April 2010, or within two weeks of the date set by the receiving university for the beginning of the semester (in principle, in September or October). Travel expenses will not be provided if the Applicant is unable to travel to Japan during this set period.

(8) Visa Requirement: Selected Applicants must obtain a College Student ( ryuugaku ..) visa prior to his arrival in Japan.

Applicants who are already in Japan under a visa other than College Student are required to change it to College Student by the end of the month preceding the start of the scholarship. Applicants who change their resident status to any status other than “College Student” after their arrival in Japan will immediately lose their status as a Japanese government scholarship student.

(9) Scholarships will not be awarded in the following cases:

1: The Applicant is an active member of the military or a civilian employed by the military

2: The Applicant is unable to travel to Japan within the dates set by the receiving university

3: The Applicant was a grantee of a Japanese Government Scholarship in the past will not be selected unless he/she has had at least three years of research or teaching experience after completion of the first scholarship. This exclusion will not apply to a research-student applicant, who (i) as a foreign student in Japan received training in the Japanese language and/or Japanese culture at a university and graduated from it, or who (ii) was a foreign student in Japan under the Japan-Korea Joint Science and Engineering Students Exchange Program.

4: The Applicant is currently enrolled in a Japanese university under the resident status of “College Student,” or if he/she plans to enroll at a Japanese university as a privately-financed foreign student between the time of application for this scholarship and the time the scholarship period is due to begin.

5: The Applicant is already the recipient of a scholarship from an organization (including a governmental organization in his/her country of origin) other than the Japanese government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology MEXT).

6: The Applicant, considered a “future graduate” and selected as such, is unable to graduate within the pre-set date or unable to fulfill graduation requirements.

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS

(1) Allowance: Under the fiscal 2009 budget, each grantee will be provided monthly with 152,000 yen (Research Student course), 154,000 yen (students enrolled in a Master's program or a professional degree program), or 155,000 yen (students enrolled in a doctoral program) (an additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may be provided to those undertaking study or research in specially designated regions) .However, these amounts are subject to change depending on the annual budget of each year. The

scholarship will not be paid to a grantee who takes a leave of absence or is long absent from his/her university.

Scholarship will be cancelled for a grantee if

- any of his/her application documents is found to be falsely stated;

- he/she is in breach of his/her pledge made to the Minister of MONBUKAGAKUSHO(MEXT);

- he/she is subjected to disciplinary action, such as expulsion or removal from register, taken by his/her university or the preparatory Japanese-teaching institution;

- it becomes definitive that the grantee will not be able to complete his/her course within the standard course term because of his/her poor academic achievement or suspension;

- his/her resident status of “College Student” as provided for in Paragraph 1-4 of Appendix to the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act changes to any other status; or

- he/she is provided with another scholarship(except for a scholarship designated for research expenses).

(2) Traveling Costs

- Transportation to Japan: Each grantee will be provided, according to his/her itinerary and route as designated by MEXT, with an economy class air ticket from the international airport closest to his/her place of residence to Narita International Airport (or following the itinerary normally used by the university where the grantee is placed). Expenses such as inland transportation from his/her place of residence to the nearest international airport, airport tax, airport usage charges, special taxes on overseas travel and travel expenses within Japan will be borne by the grantee (the place of residence of the grantee shall in principle be the address stated in the application form). Air travel from a country other than the grantee's nationality will not be covered, nor travel to Japan before April 1, 2010.

If the grantee comes to Japan to obtain admission to a university, he/she will not be provided with traveling cost to Japan.

- Transportation from Japan: The grantee who returns to his/her home country within the last-payment month of his/her scholarship will be provided, upon application, with an economy class air ticket for a flight from Narita International Airport (or following the itinerary normally used by the university where the grantee is placed) to the international airport closest to his/her place of return.

Note: Insurance premiums for travel to/from Japan shall be borne by the grantee. The airport the grantee departs from or returns to must be an airport of the country of his/her nationality.

- School Fees: Fees for matriculation, tuition and entrance examinations at a university will be paid by the Japanese government. If the grantee moves on to higher education as a nonregular student, he/she will pay for entrance examinations.

Prerequisites for qualification are a Ph.D. in Statistics or in a related field. The candidate should demonstrate excellent research potential with significant international exposure. The School is especially interested in candidates with a background in the areas of mathematical statistics, nonparametrics, survival analysis, Bayesian or robust statistics with a special attention for practical applications.
